HYDERABAD: Telangana witnessed monsoon fury in early hours of Thursday with two districts recording over 60cm rainfall. The extremely heavy rainfall occured in Venkatapur mandal of Mulugu and Chityal mandal of Bhupalpally clocking 64cm and 61cm of rain in last 24 hour span respectively. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for nine of the 33 districts in the state on account of relentless rains and swollen river bodies all across East and Central Telangana.

As per data from Telangana State Development Planning Society, several other districts also saw massive amounts of rainfall above 20cm -including Kothagudem, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Hanmakonda, Warangal and Jangaon.

The rains are occuring as part of a well-marked low pressure area over Bay of Bengal which is moving inland towards the state ushering in historic levels of rains. This is the second low pressure area to occur over the state in less than a week's time, leaving all major streams in Godavari basin on alert. The IMD chief, K Nagaratna issued flood alert as well for the East Telangana region.
