Police suspect prolonged domestic discord led to the incident, with the mother reportedly acting in a fit of rage after a dispute over a mobile phone. The mother has been arrested and booked for murder.

HYDERABAD: A seven-year-old girl died after her mother allegedly hurled her off the second-floor balcony of their rented Malkajgiri home around 2.30 pm on Monday. Police said the victim, a Class 1 student, landed on the first floor of the adjacent building, and sustained severe head injuries.The minor was declared brought dead by doctors at a nearby hospital.

Following preliminary probe, police suspect the incident is a result of prolonged domestic discord between the woman and her husband. The couple have two children, both minors."The girl's parents were involved in frequent domestic disputes. The mother told us that there were regular fights at home and that she was facing severe emotional stress and sleep deprivation due to marital issues," said N Kondalu, sub-inspector, Malkajgiri police. The husband, during interrogation, admitted to the marital discord. "He told us that his wife, post these frequent altercations, would beat the children and even threaten to die by suicide after killing them. On Monday afternoon too, a similar argument broke out between the duo," the SI added.The family has been living in the G+2 building in Malkajgiri since 2009.During Monday's altercation, police said, the child was using her mother's mobile phone.
"The mother asked for her phone as she wanted to make a call. When the child refused, the accused forcibly took the phone from her," the SI said, adding that the child then began crying incessantly. "In a fit of rage, the woman picked up the child and flung her from the balcony," the official added.On hearing the commotion, neighbours, who gathered at the building, rushed the girl to a nearby private hospital. "After she was declared dead by doctors there, her body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem. Later, the body was handed over to the family for last rites," the officer said.Police confirmed the mother attended the last rites on Tuesday, before being taken into custody.Malkajgiri police booked a case under section 103 (punishment for murder) of the BNS and arrested the accused.
