hyderabad:after initial hesitation, but following pressure from officials, mayor t krishna reddy has agreed to call for the first-ever ordinary meeting of the municipal corporation of hyderabad (mch) council. the council will meet on may 15. the council had earlier met four times, but all these meetings were described as special or urgent and had been called to complete official jobs such as the mayor’s oath, election of deputy mayor, oath by corporators elected in by-elections and election of co-option members.
the forthcoming meeting, however, would focus on issues pertaining to public and financial sanctions would be discussed and approved by the council. several decisions have been pending due to frequent postponement of such a meeting by the mayor. financial sanctions to the proposed development of amberpet stadium for the forthcoming national games and for a swimming pool have been on the hold for long. “many works entailing finance of over rs 50 lakh are pending. they have to approved by the council and sent to the government,� a senior mch officer said. other issues on the agenda include discussion and approval of the construction of a commercial complex at sultan bazar at an estimated budget of rs 2.9 crore, another at secunderabad with an estimate of rs 2.5 crore, construction of high-level bridge over hussainsagar surplus nala at gandhi nagar and approval of sanction of rs 20 crore for modern lighting in the city, the official said. and in a clear signal that the mch meant business, the authorities have fixed the council meeting for 3 pm in order to skirt the botheration of ordering lunches for 100 corporators and an equal number of visitors and officials. earlier, during each meeting the mch had to spent rs 40,000 on lunch and another rs 10,000 on tea and refreshments. “all this is taxpayers money and tomorrow we will have to answer to the public,� the mch official said.
