HYDERABAD: Khammam district hospital has been awarded 'Breastfeeding Friendly Accreditation', making it the sixth hospital in Telangana to get the recognition.

It was awarded as part of the 'Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative' (BFHI) to hospitals that promote exclusive breastfeeding up to six months. The recognition is given by the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI).

Health minister T Harish Rao said Telangana has achieved the record of having the highest number of BFHI accredited government hospitals in the country. "This is another proof that the people of Telangana are getting better and quality medical services. ," he said in a statement.

The Mother and Child Hospital at Banswada in Kamareddy bagged the first BFHI certificate, which made it the first government hospital in India to achieve this feat. Meanwhile, about 30 medical staff from the state were trained in collaboration with BPNI.
