It was perhaps the first time that a husband was allowed into the

labour room

of this government hospital. Involving the husband in the labour room is part of the ‘birth companion’ concept that the

family welfare department

is implementing in all hospitals, both government and private.

After the delivery at the Child and Mother Healthcare Centre on Sunday, it was Srilatha’s husband Naresh who cut the umbilical cord. The couple hail from Valyathanda in Mahbubabad.

“In most cases, it is the mother of the woman who is allowed in the delivery room,” Dr Srinivas, resident medical officer (

RMO

) of the hospital said.

In this particular case, the husband was informed that he could be by his wife’s side,

RMO Srinivas

said, adding that it was done by them for first time.
