Hyderabad: The political landscape in Karimnagar Corporation is abuzz as the BRS and Congress make calculated moves for the coveted mayor's seat. The BJP, meanwhile, is confident of securing the position with the backing of independent corporators, prompting Congress leaders to strategise against its efforts.
On Sunday, BC Welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the party remains in the race and is confident of winning the mayor's seat in the Karimnagar Corporation. The Congress party has set up camp at a resort in Shamirpet, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The BJP has adopted a similar strategy, coordinating its plans alongside several independents. Sources said ministers Sridhar Babu and Tummala Nageswara Rao met corporators to discuss strategy.
Reports indicate that two of the four independent corporators who initially supported the BJP have switched allegiance and are now with the Congress camp. The BJP is currently one vote short of the crucial 36 required to secure a majority in Karimnagar, while Congress appears poised to alter the arithmetic with ex-officio and independent support.
The ongoing camp politics has put the BJP on high alert, particularly following the recent actions of one of the corporators, Saijyoti. After joining the BJP in the presence of Bandi Sanjay, she stirred controversy by releasing a video stating her intention to vote for the candidate of her choice in the mayoral election on Feb 16. She also indicated that she planned to leave town due to her children's health and warned she would file a police complaint if protests took place outside her home. Her stance has caused unease within the BJP.
The Congress has stationed its corporators, along with some independents, at the Shamirpet Leonia resort, where discussions are ongoing. TPCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud is also expected to hold key discussions regarding the mayoral contest.
With camp politics continuing in Karimnagar Corporation, tensions remain high. BJP leaders are concerned about Saijyoti's shifting stance. After the election results, she joined the BJP in the presence of Bandi Sanjay. However, her recent video, in which she stated she would vote according to her preference in the mayoral election on the 16th of this month, has fuelled speculation. She also mentioned leaving town owing to her children's health and warned of lodging a police complaint if protests were held outside her residence. Her actions have led to a tense atmosphere, amid concerns she may align with the Congress camp.
