Hyderabad: Police have arrested five members of an inter-state attention diversion gang, who steal jewellery from people by posing as polishing experts.
Police arrested Ranjeeth Sah, 38, Kaneya Prasad, 35, Sunil Kumar Sah, 32, Bambam Sah, 35, and Ajay Mondal, all natives of Bihar.
On May 27, the culprits went to the house of K Vanaja, 53, a housewife from Bathukammakunta at Amberpet, posing as 'Ujala Shine agents', who were to give free demo of their jewellery shining powder.
They asked Vanaja to give a copper vessel to perform the demo. Satisfied with their work, she and her daughter Srujana gave some silver jewellery for cleaning.
The culprits then told the victims that they have a demo pouch to polish gold items too. "Vanaja, Srujana and Vanaja's sister Jyothy gave the fraudsters their mangalsutras weighing nine tolas and ear tops weighing 2.5 grams. The culprits boiled the jewellery in water mixed with some powder and turmeric," DCP, East Zone, V Ravinder said at a press meet on Monday.
The offenders then asked the women to get more turmeric, stole the gold and fled. "When the victims checked the utensil, they found the gold items missing and lodged a complaint with police," the DCP said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of cops raided the gang's hideout at Mangalhat and nabbed Rajeeth and Prasad. Based on their confession, the team went to Bihar and nabbed Bambam and Ajay and caught Sunil Kumar from Mangalhat on Monday. Police recovered 1.08 kilo gold worth Rs 30 lakh. They were produced in court and sent to judicial custody.
