Hyderabad: Opening a portal of visuals weaving thousands of narratives from around the world, the ninth edition of Indian Photo Festival (IPF) will kick off at the State Gallery of Art in Madhapur on Thursday. From there it will travel to different venues across the city, celebrating the work of 350 photographers at the Goethe Zentrum, Alliance Francaise, ICON Art Gallery, Durgam Cheruvu lake and KBR Park.With 27 physical and 10 digital exhibitions, the festival has a portrait competition for all photographers in India with the winner bagging Rs 2 lakh in prize.According to festival director Aquin Mathews, the 2023 Open Call for exhibitions received 725 submissions from 50 countries and an international jury panel selected 20 works. “Selected works will be displayed at IPF and we have also reached out to some renowned photographers whose work aligns with the festival’s vision,” he said. Mathews said the festival aims to foster a community that appreciates photography as a powerful medium for storytelling, adding: “The IPF vision is to train and nurture the next generation of storytellers.”The walls of State Gallery of Art were adorned with riveting stories, including Palani Kumar’s ‘Out of Breath’ about manual scavenging, Costa Rica-based Glorianna Ximendaz’s ‘Origen’ on sexual abuse and violence, photojournalist D Ravinder Reddy’s photo essay on the Babri Masjid demolition or Latur earthquake and many more.This year’s IPF will also host art talks, documentary screening, four workshops and a portfolio review for aspiring photographers. Senior photo editor at National Geographic, Samantha Clark, Ravinder Reddy, Palani Kumar among others will talk on a slew of topics ranging from the fundamentals of pitching photo stories to wearable art to photo essays on geographical and day-to-day life issues. The festival is open to all from November 23 to January 7 from 11 am to 6 pm.
