IIT Delhi begins pilot survey of Waqf properties in T’gana

Hyderabad: Following a directive from the Centre to conduct a survey of Waqf properties across various states, IIT Delhi has commenced its work in Telangana by launching a pilot survey.A team from the institute visited the state in the first week of this month, spending around 10 days on the ground and collecting data on 75 Waqf properties as part of their preliminary assessment.According to officials from the Telangana Waqf Board, the IIT Delhi team selected 75 properties across Hyderabad and the adjoining districts of Rangareddy and Medchal. The sample was chosen randomly to include a mix of rural and urban properties, agricultural and non-agricultural lands, as well as buildings such as shopping complexes. The team visited several locations to gain insights into the practical challenges of Waqf property management."Following the pilot study, IIT Delhi will undertake a comprehensive survey of all 33,929 Waqf properties in Telangana, covering a total area of 77,538 acres. The majority of these are categorised as ‘Waqf by user'. The full-scale survey is expected to begin next month," a senior official of the Waqf Board told TOI on Wednesday. "The pilot study is intended to identify ground-level issues and aid in the creation of a robust property database," he said.The ground verification comes in light of discrepancies between the current Waqf Board records and the actual status of the properties. IIT Delhi will also cross-check the information available on the Waqf Assets Management System of India (WAMSI) portal to ensure data accuracy and consistency."The ground assessment report will help IIT Delhi and the ministry of minority affairs design a comprehensive survey approach. The Delhi team has also provided a proforma to the board to submit detailed property information," a senior Waqf Board official added.Govt sources clarified that although there is an ongoing case in the Supreme Court regarding the new Waqf Act, it does not pertain to the current survey. There is no stay on the process, and the initiative is aimed at streamlining Waqf property management across the state, sources added.
