HYDERABAD: Congress parliamentary party chairperson
Sonia Gandhi on Sunday invoked the party's role in
Telangana's statehood and echoed her dream of a Congress government in the poll-bound state, while announcing six guarantees for the people.
Addressing the mammoth Vijayabheri public meeting at Tukkuguda on the outskirts of the city on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the merger of erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad with the Indian Union in 1948, she said, she was proud to be part of the historic creation of Telangana state.
"It has been my dream to see a Congress government in Telangana that will work for all sections of society," she said, while announcing the Maha Lakshmi scheme, one of the six main guarantees by Congress that would be implemented from the first day, if Congress was voted to power.
"Will you all support Congress," she asked the audience, and they replied positively by raising their hands. Sonia's speech lasted less than five minutes during which she said she was proud to announce the Maha Lakshmi scheme which will empower her sisters in Telangana and other sections of society through five other guarantees.
As part of the Maha Lakshmi scheme, she said Rs 2,500 per month aid would be given to the women, LPG domestic gas cylinder refill for Rs 500 and free travel for women in state road transport corporation buses.
The public rally was held after a two-day Congress Working committee meeting held in Hyderabad on Saturday and Sunday. Sonia was accompanied by party MP and her son Rahul Gandhi, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and TPCC president Revanth Reddy. The public meeting was attended by most CWC members, including Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan chief ministers Sukhvinder Sukku and Ashok Gehlot. However, Priyanka Gandhi did not attend the rally.
