Hyderabad: Justice Sam Koshy says road safety must be taught in the curriculum
HYDERABAD: In view of rising road accident cases, the Telangana State Legal Services Authority took up “Road Suraksha Abhiyan, 2026”, a five-day campaign to create awareness among students, youth and the public on road safety.Justice P. Sam Koshy, of the Telangana High Court and Executive Chairman, Telangana State Legal Services Authority, launched the campaign at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kundanbagh, Hyderabad on Monday.Justice Koshy said that as per annual reports on road safety, in 2025 there were around 24,826 accident cases, a 5.6% increase compared to 2024, of which casualties were around 6,500 who lost their lives and 14,768 who were injured.Referring to recent fatal accidents, Justice Koshy remarked that the reasons for the rise in road accidents were the fast increase in the number of vehicles, bikes and four-wheelers, and the craze among youth and students to have their own vehicles, and that there were also hundreds of cases which went unreported. He called on students to study the campaign, realise its importance and act upon it, particularly when they were on the road and in the driving seat.
He also emphasised that road safety must be taught in the curriculum and, while referring pointing to traffic signal parks for student awareness in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, made the students take the road safety pledge.During the campaign, the Legal Services Authorities at various levels organised awareness camps in schools and colleges to create awareness on road safety among students by explaining the rules and regulations of road safety as contemplated under the Motor Vehicles Act.
