HYDERABAD: A 71-year-old woman doctor from the city fell victim to cyber extortion, losing over 20 lakh.

In March, she came across an AI-generated advertisement featuring Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman discussing an 'investment opportunity'. Lured by the benefits, the doctor clicked on the link in the advertisement and received a WhatsApp call asking for her personal details.

She was then connected to a 'financial advisor', who persuaded her to invest 20lakh saying she made a profit of $80,000 on Bitcoin. When she could not withdraw the profits, she lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime wing.
