High drama at Gun Park: Woman drags ACP into ‘touch’ controversy

around noon on Friday after a police officer caught in a scuffle with protesters was accused of inappropriately pushing a woman rallyist. High drama followed when police tried to disperse students and civil rights activists, who were holding an impromptu demonstration, demanding protection of government-run education institutions. Assistant commissioner of police (Saifabad division) C Venu Gopal Reddy was trying to bundle out University of Hyderabad (UoH) Prof Hara Gopal into a police van, when he was gheraoed by women activists rallying under the banner of Vidhya Porata Yatra (VPY).


Earlier, they paid homage at Telangana martyrs’ memorial, delivered speeches and sought to take out a bus rally in the districts to press their demands. Since there was no permission to assemble at Gun Park, police asked them to move out.

Venu Gopal accompanied Prof Hara Gopal to a waiting van, protesters virtually laid siege to the cops. As protesters got unruly, the professor tripped along with ACP Venu Gopal. When the ACP and the professor found their feet, a woman protester held the police officer’s arm to curb his movement. The ACP tried to wriggle out and roughly pushed away the protester, who happened to be a woman.

Speaking to TOI, ACP Venu Gopal Reddy said some persons were pulling his hand, when he was taking Hara Gopal to the police van.
