hyderabad: the heavy rains which lashed the city in the last few days have helped wash away the stagnant pools of water that act as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. the flooding of water kills the larva and thereby brings down the density of mosquitoes in the city, said chief entomologist of mch, t nagabhushan rao. nagabhushan rao said heavy rains always help in the prevention of the increase in mosquitoes while moderate rainfall proliferates the mosquito density as it only fills the ditches providing more space for the breeding of mosquitoes.
the municipal corporation of hyderabad (mch) had taken up various measures to tackle the mosquito menace in the city. anti-larval operations have been taken up wherein all stagnant water pools are treated with the chemicals depending on the nature of the water. all polluted water is treated with bayfex while the non-polluted water is treated with a chemical called temophos. in the anti-adult operation, malathion fogging is done with the help of three truck mounted leco fogging machines and six portable machines. "musi is the main source of the mosquitoes in the city. the anti-mosquito operations are taken up from the 12-kilometre area from attapur bridge to dilshuknagar every week," said nagabhushan rao. nagabhushan rao said hussainsagar was not a breeding place for mosquitoes. "the water is so polluted in hussainsagar that mosquitoes do not breed there," he said. the mch has also started removing unwanted vegetation in the city to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
