Govt orders OMCs to ensure 24x7 fuel supply
Hyderabad: Following a sudden spike in fuel demand driven by rumours of post-election price hikes, panic buying and increased purchases from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, the Telangana govt has ordered an immediate increase in petrol and diesel supplies across the state. At a review meeting held at Civil Supplies Bhavan in the city, civil supplies commissioner M Stephen Raveendra directed oil marketing companies (OMCs) to raise fuel distribution by 10% to 15% and continue round-the-clock supply operations, including on Sundays and holidays, to prevent shortages during the ongoing rabi harvesting season. To stabilise availability, the state has adopted an over-supply strategy. As of Thursday, daily diesel distribution rose to 21,295 kilolitres, a 190% increase, while petrol supply increased by 118%. Overall fuel movement through the network reached 34,170 kilolitres, up 158% from the daily average. The govt said fuel supplies for harvesters and essential goods transport have been secured to ensure farming activity continues without disruption. Petrol pumps have been instructed not to display "No Stock" boards, while officials are reviewing stock positions and refill requests every four hours.
Meanwhile, joint teams from civil supplies, revenue and police departments have launched inspections against black marketing, illegal hoarding and fuel diversion. Border check posts have also been activated to stop vehicles entering Telangana only to purchase fuel.District Energy Supply Committees are monitoring the situation continuously, while the public can report fuel-related complaints through the toll-free helpline 1967.
