Government schools benefit under ECIL’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative

HYDERABAD: P Sudhakar, chairman & managing director, Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), has inaugurated and handed over a multi-purpose hall & kitchen, constructed by the company at a cost of Rs 11.26 lakhs to the Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School (MPUPS), Kamalanagar. He has also handed over a classroom, a kitchen (for mid-day meal preparation), an office room, compound wall, etc, constructed by the company at a cost of Rs 8 lakh to the Mandal Parishad Primary School, Weaker Section Colony, Vampuguda.

The facilities were constructed by the company under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to improve educational physical infrastructure in the Government Schools in its periphery. Sudhakar handed over the facilities to the respective school headmasters at a function held at the schools where B Raji Reddy, MLA was the chief guest. Kotha Rama Rao, GHMC corporator and VSB Babu, director (Personnel), ECIL were also parents. Parents of the students and the community also attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, VSB Babu, director (Personnel), ECIL informed that ECIL had adopted a total of 14 government schools in its periphery under it CSR Scheme and constructing class rooms, toilet blocks, multi-purpose halls, kitchens (for mid-day meal preparation) and supplying dual desks for the classrooms. There is an improvement in the attendance of the children after the facilities are provided and parents are willing to send their children to the schools, he said.
Sudhakar, C&MD, ECIL informed that ECIL was committed to improving its neighbourhood as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, keeping in view the directions of the government. He said a certain percentage of profits will be allocated for CSR activities. He further said that he wouldl be happy if ECIL’s CSR beneficiaries become its employees.

During the academic year 2012-13, the company adopted 14 government schools in its periphery and spent an amount of Rs. 62.59 Lakhs for improvement of physical infrastructure like construction of computer Labs, multi-purpose halls, toilet blocks, dual Desks, supply of additional computer systems and for conducting computer education classes for 2600 students (from 6th Class to 10th Class). During the year 2013-14, ECIL supplied 325 dual desks for class rooms and 70 benches for multi-purpose halls of the schools spending an amount of more than Rs 12 lakh.

Works for improving infrastructure at the schools, worth approximately Rs 99 lakh are under implementation. The company has planned to conduct computer education for 2600 students in government schools during the year 2013-14 also. Further, for environment sustainability, the company has planned to replace the 125 Watt SV Lamps of its existing 125 street lights with 40 Watt LED Lamps and construction of a second Effluent Treatment Plant, he said.
Ramprasad, Mandal Education Officer requested the ECIL Management to continue the help in conducting computer classes, start special English classes and cover more schools in the Keesara Mandal in their help initiatives. Kotha Rama Rao advised the school management to maintain the facilities created by ECIL, improve education standards and urged ECIL to extend its CSR activities to other divisions of GHMC, Kapra.
B Raji Reddy, MLA appreciated the efforts of ECIL in building quality infrastructure in the schools and offered his help to the school headmasters and other senior officers in the education department to persuade the concerned officials in state government to get funds under Rajiv Vidya Mission to meet basic needs in the Schools.
