Hyderabad: Four years after abolishing the village revenue officer (VROs) system in the revenue administration department, the Congress govt has decided to revive it at the village level. The govt is considering giving a new name to VROs such as village administrative officer. The upcoming cabinet meeting, to be held on Oct 26, is expected to discuss the re-introduction of the VRO system along with the new Right of Records (ROR) Act.
Sources said that although the BRS govt had scrapped both VRO and village revenue assistant (VRA) posts in Sept 2020, the govt is in favour of reviving only VROs. After the VRO system was abolished, the revenue assistants were sent to various departments and have been working there. Now, the govt has no intention to take back all the VROs in the new system.
"The govt is considering whether some of 5,300 VRO personnel, should be taken back by fixing a certain percentage and posting them at crucial places by conducting some tests or recruiting all VROs (with a new name) afresh. A decision may be taken by the govt in the next cabinet meeting," an official said.
"Earlier, there were corruption allegations against VROs for changing revenue records without the owners' knowledge, harassing poor farmers for small issues like mutation, and other issues. The govt should ensure that these allegations do no crop up again in the revenue administration system," an additional collector of a district said.
