HYDERABAD: A city-based jeweller has lodged a complaint with police alleging that a goldsmith, who was entrusted with a job to make jewellery items, escaped with ₹1. 4 crore worth gold and diamonds. Based on the complaint, Narayanguda police registered a theft case against the accused and launched a manhunt to nab him.
Rohit Kumar Gupta, proprietor of Sri Durga Gems & Jewellers, Narayanguda, lodged a complaint with police stating that he has been operating a wholesale studded gold ornaments business for the past four years.
He would purchase bullion from different registereddealers in the city and source gems from merchants in Mumbai, Surat and Jaipur. Rohit would issue gold and gems to various goldsmiths to make ornaments and supplied finished products to different retailers. Ganesh Chandra Das, a Ghansi Bazar-based goldsmith, was also working for Rohit.
On December 24 and January 5, Rohit had issued 1,982 grams of gold worth 1. 2 crore to Ganesh ChandraDas along with 90 carat diamonds worth 14 lakh and 6 lakh worth other gems to manufacture studded gold ornaments, all worth 1. 4 crore. Rohit called Das several times, but the latter kept delaying the delivery saying he was unwell.
As Das stopped answering phone calls from January 8, Rohit got suspicious and sent his staff to Das’s workshop on January 9. “Staff found that his workshop was locked and, when they went to his house located in the same building, it was also locked. A neighbour said he had left the house along with his family on January 8 night,” the complainant alleged. Police registered a cheating case under sections 420 and 406 of IPC.
