HYDERABAD: Customs officials detained a Chennai-based businesman, Syed Riyaz Khan, at the RGI Airport for trying to smuggle in nearly half-a-kilo of gold from Singapore by concealing it in machine tools on Tuesday.
Riyaz Khan landed at the Airport in the wee hours of Tuesday from Singapore via a Silk Air flight (MI 478). Due to his frequent international travels to Singapore and Dubai, the officials grew suspicious and thoroughly checked his baggage.
The sleuths found some machine tools and on scanning, it was found that some tools had a dark metal concealed inside. They opened the machine tools and found 49.6 tolas of gold concealed inside them. The gold, valued at Rs 15 lakh, was seized by the customs officials.
