HYDERABAD: Four persons were killed after a drunk lorry driver crashed into the rear of a DCM which had stopped to pick two hitchhikers at Adibatla late on Monday night.

Along with hitchhikers V Sai Baba Reddy (23) of Guntur and T Laxmaiah (52) of Thotapalli, two others already in the DCM - A Mahesh Kumar (21) and V Mahesh (23), both DJ operators from Ziaguda - lost their lives in the crash. Another person in the DCM, Abhilash, and both the drivers escaped with injuries.

The two DJ operators had boarded the DCM to reach home after performing at a marriage in Ibrahimpatnam.

The accident happened while Sai Baba and Laxmaiah were getting into the DCM, killing both on the spot. The two DJ operators died on the way to hospital.

"This is a case of drunken driving by the lorry driver,'' Adibatla inspector T Ravi Kumar told TOI, adding that he has been taken into custody.

The lorry driver's blood alcohol count (BAC) was 160 mg/100 ml against the permitted 30 mg/100 ml. Cops have registered a case under IPC section 304 II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against the accused. tnn
