Flooded roads, traffic snarls as heavy rains lash Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The city woke up to a chaotic Saturday morning after two hours of heavy rains and thunderstorms on Friday night across the city.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, Gachibowli recorded the highest rainfall with 54.4 mm, followed by Madhapur (48.8 mm), Khairatabad (48.5 mm) and Borabanda (48.5 mm). Other areas like Keesara (47.8 mm) and Rajendranagar (47.5 mm) were also affected.
IMD predicted heavy rain and thunderstorms till Monday. Several areas of the city experienced severe waterlogging, traffic congestion and prolonged power outages.
Areas like Madhapur, Kukatpally, Rajendranagar, Yousufguda, Borabanda and Serilingampally were submerged, leaving vehicles stranded.
“Vehicles parked in our lane were washed away within the first 10 minutes of the rain. Within the next 30 minutes, the water rose to knee level. We couldn’t go out to fetch our vehicles because of thunder and lightning,” said a jewellery shop owner in Krishna Nagar Colony, Yousufguda.
Jay Sathe, a techie, who commute from Attapur to Gachibowli, says he usually takes one hour but due to rain he took two hours.
Many areas continued to suffer power cuts even hours after the rains had subsided.
Lavanya M, from Borabanda, said: “We lost power at 12.30 pm and didn’t get it back until 2 pm. My son had his second language exam today.”
In Rajendranagar and Keesara, residents faced intermittent power supply, while parts of Allapur and Madhapur reported frequent fluctuations.
Some residents took to social media to voice their concerns. The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company said restoration efforts were underway, but damage to power lines and transformers was causing delays.
MLA raises issue of power outages in assembly
The issue of power outages was raised in the assembly on Saturday, where Yakutpura MLA Jafar Hussain Meraj questioned deputy CM, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka about the crisis. “The city faced power cuts after just two hours of rain, from my constituency to areas like Charminar and western parts of city. Some areas got power supply by 4:30 am, while others had to wait till afternoon,” he said. GHMC officials have deployed teams to clear waterlogged roads, while police are managing congestion in high-risk areas.
