HYDERABAD: Unable to grapple with his financial problems, P Vinod Kumar, a failed businessman, killed his wife and two daughters and later attempted suicide by slashing his right wrist with a knife at their Tukaram Gate house early on Friday.
Police said 38-year-old Vinod allegedly strangulated his wife, P Vasundhara (30) and their daughters— Mounica (8) and Rohini alias Bablu (2).
The incident occurred on Rohini’s second birthday on Friday.
The killings came to light when Vinod’s younger brother, Uday, came to wake them in the morning. When Vinod and his family failed to respond, Uday peeped through the window to find Vinod lying in a pool of blood. Vasundhara and Mounica were dead on the floor and Rohini on the wooden cot.
Uday immediately alerted the neighbours and shifted Vinod to Gandhi Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical.
Police investigations revealed that Vinod owned a lathe machine workshop at the Nacharam industrial area. He started the workshop with loans from financiers eight months ago, but was unable to repay as he sustained losses in the business. Vinod apparently went into a depression when financiers started pestering him for repayments.
In a suicide note, Vinod wrote he was eliminating his family and himself for he was neck-deep in loans. He requested his relatives to bury them at one place. Inspector P Prabhakar Reddy later said Vinod had confessed killing his wife and daughters to the magistrate. He used a saree and ropes to snuff out their lives. Vinod initially tried to hang himself but the cord got cut. He then slashed his wrist with a knife.
