HYDERABAD: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Thursday directed the doctor and superintendent of Mahesh Hospital, Himayatnagar, to appear in person at the SHRC office on July 23. The hospital and the doctor are alleged to have removed the gall bladder of 65-year-old Ganta Satyanarayana instead of his hernia apparently for "monetary benefits" from the state government under the Arogyasri scheme.
Satyanarayana had approached the commission citing the incident to be a gross violation of human rights.

The petitioner's gall bladder was removed on June 22 by the hospital's authorities, who left his hernia problem unattended. While gall bladder operations are covered under Arogyasri, hernia procedures are not.
On hearing the petitioner's version, the commission had ordered an enquiry into the matter. The district medical health officer (DMHO), Hyderabad, Ch Jayakumari was asked to submit a report on the same at the earliest. In the report submitted by the DMHO on Thursday, it was mentioned that the operation had indeed been conducted by the hospital authorities.
"The gall bladder was removed instead of the hernia. We have asked the hospital authorities to give us a reason for their conduct. If we are not satisfied with their answer, the hospital stands to lose its permanent registration," said Jayakumari.
