48 eye injuries, 12 burns cases reported across city
Hyderabad: At least 48 eye injuries, 12 burns and 1,981 emergencies were reported on Diwali from various tertiary care centres in the city and emergency 108 ambulances. While the overall number of injuries were similar to previous years, the severity appeared to be less this year, doctors said. At the state-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, 48 people, including 20 children aged below 12, sought treatment for various eye injuries during Diwali celebrations. Eight were admitted, but no surgeries were required. A day prior to Diwali too four minor cases were reported at the hospital."For two children, a procedure for removal of a foreign object had to be done under anaesthesia. It is a minor procedure. In the case of the eight admissions too the injuries were not severe," said Dr M Neeraja, resident medical officer of SD Eye Hospital. The LV Prasad Eye Institute too saw a good number of eye injury cases, officials said. Of the 1,981 cases attended to by Emergency Management & Research Institute (EMRI), which runs the 108 ambulances, 572 were trauma cases – highest in the last few years, as per official records. The number of trauma cases in 2021 were 298, which rose in 332 in 2022, and 382 in 2023."Overall, we have seen no major cases or casualties this year. It could be because people exercised caution while bursting crackers. Of the total cases, which include road accidents and medical emergencies, at least 20% would be Diwali-related injuries," said MA Khalid of EMRI Telangana. At the Osmania General Hospital (OGH), nine cases of burns were reported."Of the nine cases we received, seven were treated as outpatients and two required hospital admission. However, the two were also minor injuries," said OGH superintendent Dr Rakesh Sahai. At the Gandhi Hospital, three cases of burns were reported and treated as outpatients.
