HYDERABAD: The Indian diaspora in Australia unveiled a bust of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao at Strathfield in Sydney on Saturday, as part of Rao’s birth centenary celebrations.

Narasimha Rao’s daughter Vani Devi and Mahesh Bigala, a member of the PVNR centenary celebrations committee, Strathfield mayor Mathew Blackmore and councillor Sandhya Reddy attended the programme.

The three-foot high bust, sculpted by Prasad, was installed on a four-foot high pedestal at Homebush Centre Park in Strathfield.

“My father and the policies introduced by him during his governance played a crucial role in the development of the country,” Vani Devi said at the function organised at the Strathfield town hall.

“The statue of PV is only the second statue of an Indian in Australia, after Mahatma Gandhi,” Mahesh Bigala said.

The PVNR centenary celebrations committee had decided to organise events in different countries. Programmes were already held at some places with small gatherings. As Indians comprise 16% of Strathfield’s population of which the majority are Telugus, the event has seen a large gathering in Strathfield.
