HYDERABAD: The Danish Research Institute has evinced interest in providing an interest free loan in addition to a grant for restoring the nalas and the storm water drainage system to their natural state in the city.
The Institute will provide technical inputs to the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) on how to manage floods. It will give hardware and software related to flood management in the city, MCH commissioner Chitra Ramachandran said.
The Institute will study the network of storm water drains in the city and suggest measures to upgrade the system.
"It is heartening that the Danish Research Institute has selected Hyderabad for taking up the project and would provide an interest free loan," she said.
During August 2000, the city witnessed heavy downpour due to which many parts of the city got inundated and much damage occurred, mainly in the areas situated along the nalas, she said.
Immediately after the floods, the MCH had asked Kirloskar Consultants, Pune, to study the reasons why the water could not be discharged though the existing network of nalas freely, she said.
"Now the Danish Research Institute will loan the money as per the measures suggested by Kirloskar Consultants'' report," the MCH commissioner said.
