HYDERABAD: The Karkhana police on Saturday detained Telukunta Satish Gupta, convenor of the Rajiv Rahadari Property Owners' Joint Action Committee, for planning a protest against the proposed widening of Rajiv Rahadari road to 200-ft for the elevated corridor project in the Secunderabad cantonment area, a move residents have been opposing for several months.
The committee planned the protest on Saturday as chief minister A Revanth Reddy's convoy was passing the area. "I got information that the CM passed through the road at 9.40 am to attend the convocation at the Nalsar University in Shamirpet. So I posted a message on the group asking members to hold a protest by standing outside their houses holding placards when the CM's convoy took the return route," said Satish Gupta.
However, before the protests could take place, Satish alleged he was taken to the Karkhana police station. "The police arrived at my house in Vasavi Nagar around 9.50 am, saying the inspector wanted to meet me. I suspect somebody from the group informed the police," he added. Satish said he was released from the police station at 2.30 pm.
Rajiv Rahadari road is an 18-km stretch between Gymkhana ground and Thumkumta on state highway 1, where the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is set to construct an elevated corridor. The HMDA issued a notification over a year ago to widen the road to 200-ft for the elevated corridor.
V Rama Krishna, station house officer of Karkhana police station, said: "The convoy had to take a detour through ORR because of planned protest. We released the detained person once convoy passed."
Meanwhile, residents have planned to hold a protest on Sunday at Halwal, for which police have given permission.
