Last year, cybercrime officials had summoned the director for questioning which had lasted for several hours. Following an investigation which lasted for nearly a year and a half, the police are yet to clinch any substantial evidence. Officials, however, are of the suspicion that the film was shot at a three-star hotel in the city. Varma had earlier claimed that the film was shot in Poland and he had only directed the film through video-conferencing and was not physically present at the location.

Police said that they could not name the producer and other stakeholders in the film as accused as most of them lived abroad and could not be contacted. In 2018, the case was registered against him following a complaint by a women’s rights activist for promoting obscenity besides making personal remarks against another activist during a televised debate.

“RGV was booked on the charge of promoting obscenity, intimidation, violation of 66A of Information Technology Act,” a cybercrime official said. Police had earlier seized RGV’s laptop to analyse from which he is alleged to have uploaded the

movie

and sent it forensics, the results of which are awaited and need to shared with the concerned court.

Upon knowing that the director had promoted the controversial movie through social media, investigators did reach out to Twitter and other platforms to retrieve some of the deleted content from the director’s accounts. However, the social media platforms did not share the data.
