Commuters gain as ride-share apps compete over fares
HYDERABAD : The advent of new ride aggregator apps in city have made commuting cheaper, say city residents, claiming they can now choose cheaper ride options from various ride sharing services.
“Earlier there were not many options for us to book a cab and whatever the fare was fixed by a ride-sharing app, we had to pay the amount. However, the dynamics have changed now with fares being different in each app. We are now able to compare the fares and the arrival times and choose the best option from the lot,” said V Tharun Kumar referring to Yaary and Mana Yatri —that latter being launched recently.
Another commuter, John Kurian, who frequently travels between Mehdipatnam and Begumpet admitted that with several ride-sharing apps, aggregators are slashing fares. “In fact, once in a while, Mana Yatri and Yaary also show a higher cost when compared to other cab aggregators.
However, with several options to choose from, commuters are able to pick the cheapest trip,” he added. All this started with Yaary which become the city’s first zero commission-based app for drivers and has introduced less fares compared to other platforms. This was fol lowed by Mana Yatri, the brainchild of Namma Yatri, Bengaluru launched a couple of weeks ago. Both these apps are backed by open network for digital commerce (ONDC).
For instance, between Banjara Hills Ro ad No 2 and Cyber Towers in Hi-Tec City, the cab fare on Yaary on Monday afternoon was ₹222, while in Mana Yatri it was ₹277. Rapido showed ₹222, while Uber and Ola were charging ₹289 and ₹304 respectively. Similarly, the fare from Panjagutta circle to Secunderabad railway station on cabs in apps like Yaari, Mana Yatri, Uber and Ola were ₹217, ₹245, ₹269 and ₹341 respectively. On the other hand, in the case of a uto fares it was more or less the same.
Shaik Salauddin, founder president of Telangana gig and platfo rm workers union said, “Auto and cab fares in Hyderabad have declined by 20% as each ride-sharing app is trying to compete with the other. In the process, commuters are getting cheaper fares.”
Meanwhile, Paritosh Verma, co-founder of Yaary told TOIthat since the launch of their app in December, as many as 4 lakh users have downloaded it. “Already we have onboarded 40,000 drivers and want to induct more in the future. This app was designed purely for the needs of commuters and drivers of Hyderabad to provide a ffordable fares without charging any commission from drivers,” he said.
