HYDERABAD: TRS MLA from Vemulawada Chennamaneni Ramesh and Congress leader from the constituency, A Srinivas were asked to appear before a Union home ministry official on October 31 for a personal

hearing

over the legislator’s citizenship issue.


As per the orders issued by the Telangana High Court on July 10, 2019, the ministry of home affairs had issued a notice for submission of documents and personal hearing to Dr Chennamaneni Ramesh, TRS party MLA of Vemulawada and Congress leader from Vemulawada, A Srinivas, to appear at the office of Secretary (Border Management).

Prior to joining politics, Ramesh had worked in Germany and taken a German citizenship. The trouble began a few years ago when Ramesh’s political rival, A Srinivas filed a complaint stating that Ramesh was a German citizen and hence is not qualified to contest in India.

After an enquiry, the Union government had cancelled Ramesh’s citizenship on December 13, 2017, stating that he did not stay in India continuously for 12 months after returning from Germany. Ramesh challenged the cancellation before the high court and the single judge on July 10, 2019 set aside the cancellation of citizenship, directing the Union home ministry to conduct a fresh investigation into the matter.
