HYDERABAD: The problem of silt on streets in the city that contributes to the choking of drains and overflowing
sewer lines
is something that is unlikely to go away anytime soon.
Last year, sanctions were given for
cutting of roads
over 800 km for various works in the city. This year, the number has tripled to 2,500 km. This is in addition to other soil and construction materials and waste in the city that can be found from by-lanes and streets to major thoroughfares of Hyderabad. "We are in the process of selecting a site for setting up a waste management project that will recycle all construction and
road cutting
debris," GHMC additional commissioner N Ravi Kiran said.
"Once this facility is in place, any such debris or loose soil from each circle will be collected and taken to a designated spot from where the collected material will be taken to the project site for separation into soil and larger bits and then recycled," he said.
Also on the cards is a proposal to test 'water rolling' of trenches, which is the filling up of a trench once the work at the spot is completed and then using a heavy roller to compact the material and bring it level with the street. "This will prevent bumpy stretches on the roads," he said.
