City woman files plaint against loan app for blackmail, harassment

Hyderabad: A 47-year-old woman from Begumpet, working in the education sector, has filed a complaint with the city cyber crime police against an online loan app for blackmail, harassment, and circulation of morphed images. The complaint, filed on Dec 28, details the harassment meted out to the woman by an app called ‘ManjiraCash' after she applied for a loan of ₹15,000 on Dec 22. Although she received only ₹8,500, the app demanded a repayment of ₹15,000 within a week. During the loan process, the app accessed her personal data, including a selfie, she complained.After she repaid the full amount, the fraudsters morphed the selfie into nude images and sent them to her, along with contact details from her husband's phone. They threatened to share the images with her contacts unless she paid more money. Despite making another payment, the woman continued to face harassment, with abusive messages sent via WhatsApp, demanding further payments.Feeling threatened, the woman reported the incident to the cyber crime police, urging them to take immediate action against the fraudsters. A case was registered under sections 66C, 66D, and 67A of the Information Technology Act, along with other provisions of the law.The authorities have traced two contact numbers linked to the scam — one international and one domestic. Investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators.The incident highlights the growing menace of predatory practices by unauthorised digital lending platforms.
