HYDERABAD: Asaduddin Owaisi is not given to showing emotion but when chhota bhai Akbaruddin hugged him after he won their father''s seat in the Lok Sabha election, he couldn''t hold himself. Both broke down in sheer joy.
"I was confident but the margin is a bonus," Asaduddin told reporters. "The huge margin is evidence that voters even from the rural areas kept faith in me."
Sweets and paan were distributed freely in the streets of Old City after Salahuddin Owaisi''s ''bada beta'' Asaduddin won his first Lok Sabha election.
The younger Owaisi inherits a seat his father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi represented six times since 1984.
The victory was never in doubt; the margin was the only point of debate. The barrister-turned-politico left his BJP rival G Subhash Chanderji behind by 1,00,145 votes -- a satisfying victory for a first-timer. The victory was made the sweeter for the MIM leader by the defeat of the BJP-led government at the Centre.
MIM workers got into a celebratory mood right from the morning. Going around in vehicles and reciting popular Urdu verses, they erected ornate scoreboards displaying the vote count in several localities.
Podiums were erected at junctions where chairs and a public address system were arranged for local supporters and admirers to congratulate Asaduddin on his victory.
The supporters broke into impromptu Holi revely -- the colour being green. Party flags came up everywhere in the constituency. Immediately after the count, a procession was taken out from Nizam College to Darussalam with Asaduddin leading it. After meeting his father, relatives and party leaders at Darussalam, Asaduddin went to the Gachibowli stadium where he was given the winning certificate in the presence of his father.
On the way back, the new MP addressed the public at different points. Processions were banned by the police but on Thursday there was no stopping Asad. Huge rallies of fourwheelers, autorickshaws and scooters were taken.
