HYDERABAD: The Gujarat BJP won the first Lok Sabha seat uncontested in the Surat seat, but the Telangana BJP remained cautious until the Election Commission of India (ECI) scrutinised and accepted the nominations of its candidates. Party insiders revealed that BJP leaders submitted dummy nominations for around nine seats.
When Surat Congress candidate Nilesh Kumbhani's nomination was dismissed by ECI and BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal was declared the winner unopposed, Telangana BJP leaders took precautions by putting alternative candidates in place in case their official candidate’s nomination encountered issues.
The party had its leaders file dummy nominations to avoid risks, as many of our candidates are new to elections and the general election, sources in the party said.
N Narasimha Reddy, S Kumar, and Subhashchandar filed dummy nominations for the candidates in Nalgonda (Saidi Reddy), Peddapalli (Gomasa Srinivas), and Hyderabad (Madhavi Latha).
This strategy works for parties even without a B form for those candidates submitting dummy nominations. Parties can designate alternative candidates alongside the declared candidate in the B form column. If the original candidate withdraws for an unexpected reason, such as rejection by election officials, the substitutes will be considered the party's candidate with the symbol.
There was significant discussion within the party about these nominations because three seats — Hyderabad, Nalgonda, and Peddapalli —faced challenges as the cadre was unhappy with these candidates.
There was a consideration to change one candidate, but it was too late. However, alternative nominations were filed to ensure the original candidate’s safety, said a source. After the scrutiny of nominations, the alternative candidates have withdrew their nominations.
