BB, Bio E bet big on global Covid surge

Hyderabad: Indian vaccine makers, including Bharat Biotech and Biological E are expecting a revival in demand for their Covid-19 vaccines in other countries, thanks to newer Omicron variants.Both these Hyderabad-based firms have been sitting on huge stocks of unutilised vaccines due to a slump in demand as cases receded. While Biological E has 20 crore doses of Corbevax in filled form, Bharat Biotech has 5 crore doses of Covaxin in vials and 20 crore doses as substance.“Fresh stocks are ready for supplies. Additional production capacity is also available,” Bharat Biotech said. Biological E CEO Mahima Datla told TOI that of the 30 crore doses of finished vaccine, it has already supplied 10 crore doses. “The increase in cases globally indicates that Covid is not over yet. However, we as a country are prepared to tackle any situation. Currently, we have 20 crore doses in filled form. We are hopeful of receiving the orders,” Datla said.“We are confident about addressing the increasing demand. In fact, BE can supply 10 crore doses on a monthly basis,” she added. tnn
