HYDERABAD: Theatre owners in Tamil Nadu may be angry with
Kamal Hasan for deciding to release his movie 'Vishwaroopam' through direct-to-home (DTH) but in
Andhra Pradesh, exhibitors have no problem about it.
A safe formula has reportedly been worked out for the film's business wherein exhibitors will not suffer any loss for screening the movie when it has a theatrical release.
The movie, it is learnt, will be released through a distribution house belonging to Dasari Narayana Rao, in Andhra Pradesh, and neither distributors nor exhibitors stand any risk of suffering losses. The profits, however, will be shared by the producer, distributors and exhibitors.
"Kamal Hasan has opted to use a new technology. That is his prerogative. Exhibitors will not object to it so long as it does not cut into their revenue and such a formula seems to have been worked out," said M Vijayendar Reddy, president, Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce.
In fact, at the audio release of the big budget 'Vishwaroopam' held in the city on Sunday night, some of Tollywood's bigwigs appreciated Kamal Hasan for embracing the new technology. "I support him whole-heartedly," said director Rajamouli, whose 'Eega' was a huge hit in 2012. Dasari Narayana Rao also expressed his support for Kamal Hasan. Their argument is that there will be no problem of piracy for the film if it is released through DTH.
Getting Tollywood's support has become important for Kamal Hasan because in Tamil Nadu, exhibitors have warned that they will not screen his films if he goes ahead and releases 'Vishwaroopam' through DTH.
For those who subscribe to the film, 'Vishwaroopam' will be screened on their television through DTH on January 10, 2013 and the following day the theatrical release is scheduled. Kamal Hasan's experiment of releasing a film through DTH before releasing it in theatres is said to be the first in the world.
Apart from Tamil, the Telugu and Hindi versions of the film will also be released simultaneously through DTH.
