Animal adoption scheme gains momentum in Hyderabad zoo
HYDERABAD: The animal adoption scheme is picking up momentum at the 360-acre Nehru Zoological Park. The zoo park's white tiger Badri is the latest to be adopted by the management of Glendale Academy paying Rs 50,000 for a one-year period.
The amount would be utilized by the zoo for the male tiger's upkeep, including its daily feed. Four-and-half year old Badri, zoo officials said, is one among the five white tigers and is a star attraction at the zoo park.

Prior to Badri, a crocodile, a lion-tailed macaque and 10 peafowls (peacocks) have been adopted by an individual/organization so far this year.
Just last week, two women from the city had adopted peacocks at the Nehru Zoological Park. Dr Vasundhara Mira, retired principal of Sarojini Naidu Vanitha Mahavidyalaya and Aruna Ranadhir, senior columnist, adopted five peafowls (peacocks) each for a year. The women deposited cheques of Rs 12,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively towards the adoption. Zoo officials said that the two senior citizens adopted the birds with their pension.
Till about five years ago, none of the wild animal was getting adopted due to poor publicity of the scheme by the zoo officials. However, now the scene has changed for good.
Zoo Park's in-charge curator A Shankaran said that Badri is the second white tiger to be adopted by philanthropists in its history. Shankaran further said that Glendale Academy management chose a tiger in an attempt to bring their school children closer to wild life. The school also wants to send their children for educational visits, he added.
The zoo administration keeps the adoption money given by the individuals and organizations under the scheme in a bank account and utilizes the same in their upkeep.
