CHIRALA (PRAKASAM): A 75-year-old woman died at an Aadhaar enrolment centre in the town following cardiac arrest.
Officials rushed the victim to the government hospital and declared that the the Aadhaar centre was not at fault.
Guntupalli Ramateerthamma of Bosenagar reached the enrolment centre located at NRPM high school in the morning and waited for her turn to collect the application.
Sources said officials first shifted the application disbursement counter from ground floor to the first floor of the school.
Later, they shifted it from there back to the ground floor. This resulted in much hardship to the applicants, particularly the elderly.
Ramateerthamma was one of those who had to climb up and down the building because of the shifting of the applications counter. As applications are issued only on Saturdays, the centre witnessed huge rush resulting in a minor stampede.
In the melee, Ramateerthamma collapsed and died on the spot. Tehsildar P Sambasiva Rao visited the Aadhaar centre and inquired about the incident.
He clarified that no stampede took place at the centre and Ramateerthamma's death was natural.
