HYDERABAD: Five persons lodged separate complaints with Gachibowli police on Tuesday alleging that Ramya Raghupathy, estranged wife of a Tollywood actor, duped them of over Rs 40 lakh.
According to police, the victims alleged that in August 2019, they were introduced to Ramya, a resident of Nanakramguda, by some common friends.
Ramya was introduced as an entrepreneur-cum-social activist running hotels in Bengaluru, a chit fund and a private company.
“Ramya introduced herself as the daughter of former minister of erstwhile AP and wife of film actor Naresh,” B Saritha, a teacher of an international school and one of the complainants, told police.
Subsequently, Ramya invited the victims to her house for a meeting and explained about a group income scheme which offers 20 per cent annual interest on the invested amount.
The complainants alleged that on the instructions of Ramya, they obtained loans from banks and gave her the amount for business purposes. “Ramya also executed an agreement on August 22, 2019 with me and others stating that she will return the amount within one year along with 20 per cent interest. Initially for sometime, she issued cheques for repayment but later the checks bounced,” said one of the complainants, P Laxminarayana, a software engineer from Chintalkunta.
Laxminarayana and other complainants have also claimed that Ramya threatened them when they asked her to return the money and that they have even approached actor Naresh, who made it clear to them that he has nothing to do with Ramya’s activities.
“Five persons lodged a complaint with Gachibowli police alleging that Ramya, estranged wife of actor Naresh, cheated them for about Rs 40 lakh. As the complaint is civil in nature, we have sent it for legal opinion,” Madhapur DCP K Shilpavalli said.
Another complainant Srinath Vasam, 41, a BSNL employee from Gachibowli, alleged that Ramya started avoiding him after receiving the money.
“She gave various excuses by saying that she had contracted Covid-19 infection twice and was hospitalised and even said that she was attending the funeral of Kannada actor
Puneeth Rajkumar in Bengaluru, just to avoid us. After I grew suspicious of her activities, I along with my other friends called up Ramya’s mother and complained to her about Ramya,” Srinath said.
“Ramya’s mother later called each one of us up and informed us that her daughter was not staying with Naresh and was also mentally unsound and physically unhealthy. Meanwhile my personal loan repayment ran into trouble and adversely affected my CIBIL Score," Srinath alleged.
