HYDERABAD: A 26-year-old

Filipino

woman delivered a

baby

boy at the

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

(

RGIA

) on Saturday after the flight she was travelling made an

emergency landing

in the city.

The woman, who was 37-weeks pregnant, went into labour while travelling in a Cebu Pacific flight from Dubai to Manila which forced the airline crew to make a landing in Hyderabad.

The boy was born in the ambulance of the airport medical centre (AMC) and was later shifted to

Apollo Hospital

in Jubilee Hills.

Doctors at the AMC said that they were intimated about an incoming medical emergency at around 04:17 am on Saturday.

“A team consisting of our doctor, nurses and ambulance driver rushed to airport apron, Bay 58, inside RGIA after all security checks. Once the flight landed, they attended to the patient in the aircraft and found out that the patient was complaining of severe abdominal pain and bleeding,” said the doctor adding that the in-flight examination revealed that the patient was in labour with rupture of membranes.

The doctors said that while the patient was being shifted from the aircraft parking bay to the AMC, she went into active labour and delivered the baby in the ambulance at 05:29 am. “The woman, Mananieta Baby Jean Ledesma, and her baby boy were immediately shifted initially to the AMC and subsequently to Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills for further treatment,” the doctor said. Both the mother and her baby boy, who weighs 2.7 kg, are said to be stable at the hospital.

The superintendent of the AMC, meanwhile, said that they see such medical emergency cases once in every two to three months and that this year they had already seen six

delivery

cases at the AMC.
