1,500 take part in organ donation walkathon

HYDERABAD: Over 1,500 people participated in the 2K Walkathon to spread awareness for organ donation to mark

World Kidney Day

on Thursday. The walkathon was aimed at spreading awareness about early diagnosis, need to pledge organs for donation and risk factors involved in kidney ailments.

The awareness programme was held in the backdrop of kidney disease being the fourth biggest killer after cancer, cardiac disease and diabetes. Unavailability of cadaver donors often leads to death with six out of 10

chronic kidney disease

patients.

“By pledging to donate your organs today, you are doing a great service towards humanity. I appreciate the efforts of the organisers for taking steps to raise awareness,” said Dr G Swarna Latha, coordinator, Jeevandan (cadaver transplantation programme), government of Telangana. Jeevandan in association with Care Hospitals, Hyderabad Runners and Cheyutha Foundation to organise the walkathon.

The walkathon was flagged off by actress Archana Shastry and Latha.
