12 fall ill after drinking adulterated toddy in Hyderabad; shops in Hydernagar, Shamshiguda under scrutiny; samples sent for testing

HYDERABAD: Around 12 people fell ill after consuming adulterated toddy at licensed toddy shops in Hydernagar and Shamshiguda on Tuesday night, excise officials said.

Initially, a few affected persons were rushed by their family members to the Ramdev hospital in Kukatpally after they fell ill. Soon, more people who drank toddy from the two shops on July 6 started coming in with symptoms of acute diarrhoea and vomiting.

Police and excise authorities reached the place and shifted five people from Ramdev hospital to NIMS for better treatment. “One of them is weak and severely unwell. The others are fine. We have made arrangements at NIMS and our teams are currently checking the two toddy compounds to collect samples,” said a senior excise official.

Kukatpally police were deployed at Ramdev hospital to prevent violent reactions from the families of the patients.
