BELGAUM: Blurring the linguistic gap are the writers across the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. That the Kannada works are being translated into Marathi holds a testimony to the fact that language knows no boundaries. "Most of Kannada works are being translated into Marathi and Maharashtrians enjoy them. Most popular are the works of Shivaram Karanth, Girish Karnad and
S L Bhyrappa," said Prof Chandrakant Pokale, Kendra Sahitya Academy award winner.
To name a few: Marali Mannigge, Mai Managala Suliyalli and Mukajjiya Kanasugalu of Karanth and Vansruksha and Parva of Bhyrappa. Karnad's works like Tughlak, Yayaati and Nagamandal are often enacted by Marathi theatre artistes in Maharashtra. And Marathi writers popular among Kannadigas are V S Kandekar, Balachandra and Vishwas Patil.
As a researcher, Pokale found that Hindutani vocalist Gangubai Hangal, Pt Bhimsen Joshi and Kallikarjun Mansur had left a lasting impression on Maharashtrians.
