Koppal: Muslims and Congress MPs organised a major demonstration here on Saturday to protest against the Waqf Amendment Act.
A procession was taken out from Clock Post towards Ashok Circle, with thousands joining to express their opposition to the central govt's move. At Ashok Circle, the participants observed silence to remember those who lost their lives in the recent Pahalgam terror incident.
Addresssing the gathering, Maulvi Mufti Nazir Ahmad Taskin of Yousufia Masjid denounced the Pahalgam incident, saying: "We cannot accept the murder of innocent individuals by terrorists. The perpetrators must be apprehended and punished. However, we must refrain from politicising this matter. One's national identity precedes religious identity."
He declared that the Waqf Amendment Act's implementation would be unfair to Muslims and should be prevented.
Religious leader Hafiz Moyuddin of Diddikeri Masjid pointed out that Ambani and Adani have occupied Waqf property in Mumbai, leading to legal proceedings by Muslims. He claimed the central govt's amendment to the Waqf Act aims to benefit only Ambani and Adani.
MP K Rajashekhar Hitnal highlighted rising prices and unemployment concerns. He criticised the central govt for focusing on modifying the Waqf Act and emphasised that Waqf properties, contributed by Muslims for their community's development, should remain out of govt control. He accused the Centre of undermining Waqf principles through "unnecessary amendments".
Former MP Sanganna Karadi, MLA K Raghavendra Hitnal, municipal council president Amjad Patel, council members Rajashekar Adoor, Mahendra Chopra, Muthu Kushdagi, and Akbar Pasha Paltan were part of the rally, as also Waqf Board president Peera Hussain Hosalli.
