Man held for growing ganja plants
Davanagere: Acting on a tip-off, a team of excise officials raided the house of M T Parameshwarappa in Hanagavadi village of Honnali taluk in Davanagere district on Monday and seized dry ganja and 73 ganja plants from there. He confessed to growing ganja plants in his backyard to sell them for money. In all, 648gram ganja worth Rs 6,500 has been seized. After arresting Parameshwarappa under NDPS Act, he has been sent in judicial custody, said a release issued by deputy excise commissioner B Shivaprasad.
Film screening
Dharwad: Chitra Film Society will screen three films on March 10, 11 and 16 at Srujana auditorium. The show will start at 6.15pm.
On Thursday, Kannada film ‘Naatchicharami’ directed by Mansore will be screened while on Friday, Bengali film ‘Nirjan Saikate’ directed by Tapan Sinha will be screened. Kannada film ‘Cibil Score’ directed by Umesh Badiger will be beamed on Wednesday.
Skating rink renovated
Davanagere: Davanagere CMC corporator Gadigudal Manjunath, who is also the opposition leader in Davanagere CMC, on Sunday opened the renovated roller skating rink located behind the swimming pool at MCC ‘B’ here. Roller skating started rolling over 20 years ago by a group of like-minded people under the banner Roller Skating Rink Association. But it was stopped for over four years due to damage to the rink and also due to the pandemic, Manjunath said, adding: “The rink has now been renovated by the department of youth empowerment and sports. Parents can send their children to practise skating regularly.” Former corporator Lingaraj, association vice-president Harish and its office bearers, and coaches Niranjan Babu, Ganesh C and Pruthvikanth were present.

Vidhana Soudha Chalo by shepherds
Hubballi: Kuruba Samajad Sanghatanegala Okkuta will take out Vidhana Soudha Chalo (protest march) on March 21 to urge government to arrest those involved in the recently reported rape and murder case of a shepherd woman at Kundgol taluk Yaraguppi village. Okkuta convener Yallappa Hegde told reporters that CM Basavaraj Bommai and the home minister have not acted on the case. Kuruba community leaders and others from across the state will participate in Vidhana Soudha Chalo. “Of late, there has been a spike in the number of such cases and harassment against shepherds. To curb them, the government will be petitioned,” he said.
Awareness against child marriages
Kalaburagi: Creating awareness among people on the perils of child marriages is necessary so as to make Kalaburagi a child marriage-free district, said Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board chairman Dattatreya Patil. Patil was speaking after launching an awareness programme, jointly organised by the district administration, police, women and child development, health and family welfare department, district information and public relations department, public instruction departments, district child protection unit and child helpline. A signature-collecting drive was also held at the DC’s office premise in the presence of ZP CEO Dilish Shashi. A bus will travel to all villages in every taluk and play videos to spread the word against child marriages.
