Special mobile service unit to cater to haemophilia patients

(KHS) will soon launch a mobile hemophilia care service unit to manage the bleeding episodes of hemophilia patients as early as possible and to save them from complications.

Dr Suresh Hanagavadi, president of KHS, said that the service will be available for those living in and 100km around Davanagere.

KHS has been serving hemophilia patients for more than three decades. It educates family members of

haemophilia

patients through awareness camps and workshops.

“During emergencies our mobile service unit will rush to the doorstep of the patient on receiving a phone call and provide primary treatment. Later, the patient will be brought to the hemophilia treatment centre located in KHS campus for further management, particularly rehabilitation, or will be admitted to the ICU in any nearby hospital depending on the patient’s condition,” Dr Hanagavadi said.

Haemophilia is genetic and incurable bleeding disorder due to deficiency of certain clotting proteins in the blood. Internal bleeding most commonly occurs in weight bearing joints and muscles besides in brain or abdomen, which are fatal. As most of the rural patients receive delayed treatment, more amount of blood collects in the joints which causes progressive disability. Some patients may succumb to the life threatening bleeds on the way before reaching the hospital, Dr Hanagavadi said.

“Hence, we are introducing a mobile treatment service to infuse deficient clotting protein, known as anti-haemophilia factor (AHF) needed to the patient at the earliest,” said. He said the
