DHARWAD: Sitarist Hameed Khan passed away at the age of 69 at his residence in Malamaddi here on Saturday. He is survived by wife Fareeda, musician son Mohsin Khan and painter daughter Arma Khan.
A descendent of famous sitarist Ustad Rahimat Khan, Hameed served as the sitar teacher at Karnatak University’s College of Music located on the Karnatak College campus.
Simultaneously, he was teaching sitar at Bharateeya Sangeeta Vidyalaya run by his family.
He had trained several foreign students who later joined hands with him in establishing the Kalakeri Sangeet Vidyalaya at Kalkeri village, off Dharwad.
Apart from teaching music, the school also provides formal education to underprivileged children besides providing them free food and shelter.
Hameed’s overseas disciples visit the school on rotation and guide children.
A large number of his disciples, music lovers and admirers paid their respects to Hameed at his residence.
