Ryot’s gamble to grow onion in drought-hit region pays off
All the taluks in Dharwad district have been declared drought-hit, and Navalgund is among the worst-hit. However, failure of monsoon did not deter Ravireddy Roogi of Sotakanal village in Navalgund taluk from a successful harvest. Ravireddy along with his four brothers decided to go ahead with sowing, and grew onion on 24 acres. They lifted water from Bennehalla, which flows 10 km away from the village, using an IP set and through pipelines. The brothers managed to bring the water to their field, and filled the farm pond.
Their effort did not go in vain, as they could grow 1,400 quintals of onion. To their luck, the price of onion shot up, and so far, the brothers have sold 600 quintals of onions at a whopping Rs 25 lakh. The family is looking forward to sell the remaining stock and get a good price.
“Apart from onion, we have also grown other traditional crops. This is not the first time we have grown onion. We do it every year, only to find a variation in its price. This year we have been lucky that onion has fetched a good price. We expect to earn more by selling the remaining 800 quintals,” said Ravireddy.
Provide 10cr spl grant to each drought-hit taluk: BJP
The BJP drought study team in Karnataka has demanded a special grant of Rs 10 crore for each drought-affected taluk in the state. Former water resources minister, Govind Karjol, accused the Congress government of engaging in petty politicking instead of helping farmers. Karjol also criticized the government for not providing water supply and fodder banks to prevent migration in affected areas. He warned that if the government does not take the report seriously, an agitation will be launched. Karjol also criticized the government for focusing on official transfers instead of addressing the drought situation.
Himachal Pradesh worst-hit this monsoon; Maharashtra & Uttarakhand next

Himachal Pradesh saw significant devastation and loss of life, with three major intense rainfall spells in July, August, and August again. Maharashtra and Uttarakhand also experienced heavy rainfall and casualties. The country witnessed the second-highest number of heavy rain events since 2019, with half occurring in July.
