River Kagina to demarcate Karnataka, Telangana border, say officials

taluk in Vikarabad, Telangana, the deputy commissioners of the two districts have decided to demarcate the border in the middle of the Kagina, saying the river would divide the states in the area under consideration.


Kalaburagi DC R Venkatesh Kumar and Vikarabad DC Syed Omar Jaleel on Friday visited Potangal village, where River Kagina will divide the state, Kumar carrying a map from a 1913 survey and Jaleel one from 1940.

Kumar said the 1913 map showed Tandur was part of Kalaburagi district but, with the reorganisation of states in 1956, the taluk became part of Andhra Pradesh and, later, Telangana. He said land records and drafts available in Kalaburagi district after the demarcation of the states had identified the border at the midpoint of River Kagina, in which milestones from the time had been found.

Jaleel said Tandur taluk had become part of Telangana after creation of the state in 2014. There is no record of the border except in records of patta sites on the bank of River Kagina, he said. According to the Hyderabad Survey Manual, Jaleel said, if a river divides two states, its center point should be identified as the border.
