NDPS checks to be introduced in all state prisons: Alok

Hubballi: Director general of prisons and correctional services Alok Kumar inspected the sub-jail in Hubballi, and said that the prisoners entering and leaving the jail will be checked for bringing narcotics inside the prison, under the NDPS Act.Speaking to reporters in Hubballi, he said, "Prisoners entering and leaving the jail will be checked under the NDPS Act, which will help detect if drugs are coming inside the jail. It will soon be introduced in all prisons across the state."
Yoga and meditation are made mandatory for all jail inmates, and NDPS tests are mandatory for first-time offenders, he added. "Checking of inmates has intensified after complaints of narcotic materials being thrown inside the jail came to light. Action will be taken against the officials if such incidents occur in their jail," clarified Alok.Alok Kumar said de-addiction centres are available at Parappana Agrahara central prison, and Belagavi central jail. "Inmates who are addicts are treated here, to ensure they get rid of such habits. A de-addiction centre was also established in Dharwad prison after inspection," he added.There are 132 prisoners in the Hubballi jail. Most inmates are accused in murder, and rape, cases, and some lived there for two to three years, he added."Prisoners are made to work on developing their skills which will help them after release. Steps are being taken to ensure first-time convicts do not get into the social circles of habitual offenders," said Alok.
